Dance a Line together.
Interdisciplinary art workshop.
Originally developed during my role as Culture Collective artist embedded with Dixon hall community for elderly and carers. This workshop utilises movement and lino-cut print making to explore how drawing and movement talk to each other through; rhythm, pattern, shape texture and space. This workshop was devised to support participation across a range of physical support needs.

Photgraphy: Erika Stevenson (Dixon hall images), Gill Bird (Findhorn, open workshop)

ALL GAMES ALLOWED is a project developed by Camelon Arts and Mark Bleakley.

Inspired by gym halls and sports fields floor markings Mark ran a series of workshops to create new games and drawings using the basic shapes and patterns we see on football pitches, tennis courts, running tracks and more.

We would like to thank all the participants that have created these games through workshops with Mark at: Tamfourhill community centre school holidays programme, Cyrenians, Falkirk High and Forth Valley Sensory Centre.

The Big Screen Project & Singing helps me breathe. 2020.
Camelon Arts (Artlink Central).
Project artist co-ordinator.

Working as project artist and co-ordinator as part of Camelon Arts, We had planned to develop a winter event as part of the local festival calendar. Due to the Pandemic we had to cancel and change many plans. One outcome was Singing Helps me breate; a song witten by freedom of mind choir and film portrait of the choir by Jassy Earl. We had originally developed a relationship with the choir for a cancelled project Sails and Songs (summer 2020).
With the contant negotiating movement restricitions Camelon Arts (Mina Heydari-Waite and Myself) decided to bring the art to the homes of Camelon with The Big Screen project; over two days travelling the breadth of Camelon and Tamfourhill, this screened 3 new video and musical works by local artists alongside Freedom of Mind Choirs song.

I am a

Scottish and Irish artist and choreographer based between Glasgow and Copenhagen where I completed my MFA in Choreography. I present work in both dance and visual arts contexts.

Formally trained in visual
art, my practice is rooted in social dance through Bboying (Breakdancing) and
House dance. Like the Gemini I am, my practice follows desire and pleasure in many directions at the same time, this has produced a practice that is equally social as it is conceptual, rhythmic as it is sculptural.

My work explores how We handle things; people, objects and how objects handle Us through: environments, architecture, and social structures. Specifically I am very interested in the power of dance to change and create new spaces and places.
Working in various collaborative roles of performer, artist, dramaturg, writer, I have worked with artists such as Jo Fong, Florence Peake, Colette sadler and Farah Saleh.

In a particular way - three dancers empty the stage for new landscapes to
unfold - a folk emerges through a dance - animals perform humans performing
animals - In that particular way that dust particles float through pathways
never fully settling anywhere, caught in the pleasure of letting go.

This performance was developed in three parts where ideas of landscape,
community, rhythm and play come together in an imagined folk dance for a
somewhere future. This performance is a reflection on these ideas, what images
and poetry comes from weaving these particular thoughts, movements and
experiences together.

This performance is for all ages (8+ recommended) and can be presented in
outdoors, theatrical and gallery contexts.

Working with three performers and a scenography made up of piles of
abandoned textiles and clothing. This works playful choreography and highly
visual approach comes from Marks unique background in visual art and his
dance practice in social dance.

Opening with ‘the rag-mammoths’ a bleak otherworldly environment is created
through British folk inspired creatures, when the piles of clothes shed away the
community get to work; clearing, energising and playing with each other and
the space. Percussionist Remy Gouffault brings a lo-fi patchwork of ambient and
rhythmic compositions accompanying the three performers journeys. Over 40
minutes rituals, games, dances, nursery rhymes and sculptures are created by the
three dancers in this ever-changing landscape.

This work is a reflection on the nature of a community as a landscape. Exploring
the ways in which dance, rhythm and play can create and shape our communities
and the spaces we inhabit.

Dance Makes the Floor is a project centred around the creation of a
collectively made dance floor. This is an ongoing project, an archive will be created during its next stage.

“In 2020 when the world almost stopped I could feel the floor moving
away from me. So I started to build my own.”

DMTF is an ongoing art work which aims to create sections of this dance
floor in different locations with different communities, through workshops,
conversations and public performances. Mark’s utopian hair-brained idea
is to create a full sized dancer floor, made by all the dancers that have set
foot upon it, bringing everyone together to dance.

This project is context specific, through the collaborations with different
dance artists, DJs and community groups, the performances and
presentations will shift according to the research produced with the
collaborators.

As part of documenting this ongoing projects research and engagement
with guest artists and communities of dancers Mark will develop video
response to the contributions with each group and build an audio archive
of the conversations had with the various artists invited to help build the
floor. These videos and audios will be archived as part of the projects
website and for future gallery presentations.Images from Dance Makes the Floor at Govanhill Festival. Photography - Erika Stevenson. DMTF @ Govanhill Festival Creative Team. LEAD ARTIST: Mark BleakleyDANCERS: Kirstin Halliday, Lewis Normand &

STEPPING IN | SPILLING OUT.

Stepping in… Spilling out: across your parent’s carpet, stepping into the cypher, stepping in solidarity, stepping with strangers in the club. Collaboration with French percussionist Rémy Gouffault, this work takes a walk along the personal history of Mark's dance practice through the foundational act of stepping; the different people, communities, histories and politics that collide with Mark's body through these movements.
Beginning on an oversized drawing of his family home carpet, using movement, conversations, participation and music, Mark and Rémy guide you through layers of landscapes stepping through; parties, protests, rituals, mosh pits and gas clouds.

This performance was made in participation with guest dancers contributing recorded conversations to the live performance. In each iteration I wish to meet with dancers in each location of the performance and bring their recorded conversations into the performance. FEEDING THE SANDWORM:
The dwellers notebook. 2023.

Feeding the Sandworm is a speculative fiction in dance and writing by Mark Bleakley. Enter the landscape of the Emptiness and sit with two dwellers as they push, quake and stroke the surface into an ever shifting landscape always on the cusp of becoming. Researching dances relationship to ground (social, spiritual, political, physical) and the ways it shapes how we inhabit our bodies and space. This work is inspired by the short story Stone Hunger by NK Jemesin, Feeding... naively brings this research into a fictional future where movement scores become tools for a game of make believe.

Alongside the performance physical and digital copies (scan qr code) of the accompanying text are available to read.
